Job Description
Be a part of the legacy: Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program Our Research Laboratories' Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program aims to be a best-in-industry program for industrial postdoctoral researchers, designed to provide you with an academic focus in a commercial environment. With the resources, reach, and expertise of a large pharmaceutical company, postdoctoral researchers will be positioned to excel in an institution committed to breakthrough innovation in research and discovery.
Position Overview
The Materials and Biophysical Characterization (MBC) department within the Analytical Research and Development (AR&D) organization in our company's Research Laboratories is responsible for advanced biophysical and materials characterization of our increasingly complex vaccine portfolio. Our goal is to develop fundamental mechanistic understanding for our company's biotherapeutic development portfolio including structure and dynamics, enabling our teams to solve complex challenges and get lifesaving and altering medicines to our patients faster. We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative postdoctoral research fellow to lead the development of next-generation biophysical characterization and computational tools for structure elucidation of vaccine products. We are looking for a versatile scientist comfortable in conducting both bench-top biochemistry and handling advanced biophysical instrumentation and computation. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment and contribute to cross-functional teams. There will be close collaboration with Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPS), a department which enables drug discovery and drug product development through application of pharmaceutical science and drug delivery research from target identification through clinical candidate selection for both therapeutics and vaccines. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to author scientific papers on their research and present novel findings at scientific conferences.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Prepare samples, design and perform Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) experiments and process large experimental and computational SAXS data sets for structure elucidation.
- Learn and develop novel approaches in SAXS experimental design, characterization and data modeling and integrate SAXS results with other biochemical and biophysical assays and cell-based potency measurements.
- Lead or facilitate meetings with both internal and external collaborators and participate in cross-functional teams at project-related topics.
- Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present in both internal and external scientific conferences.
Minimum Education Requirements: Candidates must currently hold a PhD or will receive a PhD within the year in Biophysics, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
Required Experience and Skills: - The successful candidate must be highly self-motivated, have a positive and dynamic attitude to work, interested to learn new concepts and technologies, independently takes initiatives in problem solving and find solutions to scientific challenges, have excellent written and oral communication abilities, collaborate effectively on multidisciplinary teams, and be able to demonstrate flexibility in adapting to change in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- The selected candidate will have a strong background in biophysical/biochemistry characterization, analytical method development and perform independent research including data capture and interpretation for vaccines, biologics or materials.
- Experience in Small-Angle Scattering (SAXS) or Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS).
Preferred Experience and Skills: - Exposure to advanced small angle scattering computational tools.
- Proficiency in advanced data analysis tools like Python, Matlab, R or C++.
- Biophysical and materials science analytical competency in areas such as UV-VIS spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, particle sizing, flow cytometry, circular dichroism (CD), thermal analyses such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) is helpful.
- Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and other spectroscopic techniques including atomic force microscopy (AFM) along with informatics data analysis are also considered valuable skills.
Postdocfellow NOTICE FOR INTERNAL APPLICANTS In accordance with Managers' Policy - Job Posting and Employee Placement, all employees subject to this policy are required to have a minimum of twelve (12) months of service in current position prior to applying for open positions.
