Position Summary :
Installs and maintains overhead and underground telecommunication network infrastructure.
Education & Experience: High school diploma (GED). Preference given to candidates with experience in installation of outside plant fiber optic cable installation/maintenance, aerial utility operations, or underground electric/telecommunications operations, or certificate from recognized electric/telecommunications lineman training program.
Skills & Abilities: Qualified to perform all aspects of the work without supervision. Excellent customer relations skills. Must maintain good public relations and good working relations with other personnel. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
Certifications/Licenses: Valid CPR/AED/First-Aid Certificate*
Certificate of completion of TVPPA Climbing Lab, TVPPA Fiber Optic Construction Lab, or certificate from accredited lineman training facility*
Forklift Operation Certificate*
Traffic Control and Flagging Certification*
Supply Space Certified by JEA*
NCTI Fiber Installation and Activation*
NCTI Fiber Testing and Maintenance*
*Certifications to be obtained within six months Physical Demands: The ability to use a computer keyboard effectively. The ability to orally communicate by phone, radio, and person to person. The ability to see and read printed material. The ability to lift, carry, and use heavy tools and materials. The ability to climb wooden structures and perform work from heights and from a ladder. The ability to safely operate a standard equipped JEA vehicle. The ability to operate company field service installation equipment. The ability to enter/exit 22” diameter accessways as well as work in confined spaces. The ability to walk several miles over rough terrain. The ability to work in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and other similar spaces.
Work Environment: Outdoor conditions. At risk for gas fire/explosions or electrocution. At risk for exposure to unsanitary/unhealthy and unsafe conditions. Works in the supply space as defined by the NESC. Location and work hours are determined by Management and may be adjusted as needed. Subject to on-call 24/7.
Driving: Must have and maintain a valid Tennessee class “A” license (“Government Only") with air brake endorsement within six months of employment.
Telephone: Must maintain an operating telephone and furnish the number to his/her supervisor.
Essential Duties: - Constructs all required specifications safely and in a professional manner without supervision.
- Installs gateways and power cables to gateways and battery back-ups.
- Operates and maintains aerial devices (bucket trucks), backhoe, skid-steer, trencher, cable puller, cable tensioner, and other heavy equipment.
- Connects wires and cables to terminals and attaches or detaches various kinds of hardware to wires, cables, and buildings.
- Determines differences in wire and cable color and audible tones.
- Prepares fiber and installs fusion and mechanical optical connectors.
- Prepares newly installed cables, conductors, and fibers preparatory to splicing by removing outer sheath, insulation, and fiber coating.
- Closes splices by enclosing with bolted-on waterproof case, thermally applied shrinkable sleeving or fitting, and wiping a lead sleeve over splice opening.
- Uses test equipment to send and receive signals to isolate trouble and ensure that circuits meet requirements.
- Reviews and interprets work orders and circuit diagrams and follows standard practices.
- Reviews and analyzes complex schematic drawings to determine work to be done and sequence of tasks.
- Completes documentation and reports information for work performed as required.
- Works with GIS platforms to review cable and splicing documentation.
- Ability to use optical time-domain reflectometer.
- Uses optical meter to determine light levels.
- Troubleshoots and maintains equipment.
- Interfaces with customers on construction, installation, or repair work.
- Interacts with customers to verify that work to be done is as requested. Evaluates customer needs. Educates on proper usage. Takes action to satisfy customers and enhance JEA’s image.
- Ability to properly and safely use equipment to ascend, work, and descend a wood structure.
- Ability to perform the Hurt-man Rescue of an injured climber from a wood structure.
- Promotes and sells cable, internet, telephone, and other company services.
- Troubleshoots and repairs co-axle, RJ45/twisted pair, and RJ11/Cat-5 E wiring.
- Uses access terminals to communicate with on-line databases for testing, receiving, and closing job tasks and tracking inventory.
- Installs, disconnects, performs service changes, and troubleshoots cable, internet, and telephone for residential and business customers.
- Follows safety procedures on all work assignments.
- Performs additional duties as requested.
